World Day of Peace — 1 January 2026
MESSAGE OF HIS HOLINESS POPE LEO XIV
FOR THE 59th WORLD DAY OF PEACE
____________________________
Peace be with you all
Towards an “unarmed and disarming” peace
Core Theme and Vision
The message calls for a fundamental re-orientation of how peace is understood and pursued in the modern world. Pope Leo XIV emphasizes that peace should not be grounded in weapons, fear, or military strength, but rather in trust, justice, love, and mutual understanding. This vision of peace is described as both “unarmed” (not based on threats or arms) and “disarming” (capable of dissolving conflict and opening hearts).
Biblical and Theological Foundation
The Pope draws on the Gospel greeting of the risen Christ, “Peace be with you,” stressing that this peace is not merely an absence of conflict but a transformative presence that changes individuals and communities from within. Peace is portrayed as a journey and a lived reality, not simply an abstract ideal.
Critique of Contemporary Approaches
Pope Leo XIV critiques contemporary political and cultural narratives that equate security with military force or deterrence. He points to the global trend of increasing arms expenditures and the risk that societies may become desensitized to violence when peace is treated as distant or unattainable.
Practical and Cultural Implications
The message calls on all people—believers, non-believers, political leaders, and citizens—to embody peace in daily life by rejecting all forms of violence, fostering empathy, and promoting education and communication that reinforce trust rather than fear. It encourages dialogue, nonviolent participation, and restorative justice as essential components of building sustainable peace.
Universal Invitation
Finally, the Pope invites humanity to recognize peace not just as a distant goal but as present and actionable now, urging a collective commitment to practices and relationships that reinforce unity, compassion, and hope across cultural and political divides.

Circumcision of Jesus – New Year’s Day
ﻋﻴﺪ ﺍﻟﺨﺘﺎﻧﺔ – ﺭﺃﺱ ﺍﻟﺴﻨﺔ ﺍﻟﻤﻴﻼﺩﻳّﺔ
A Reading from the Book of Genesis. Father, give your blessing. (Genesis 21: 1-5
The LORD took note of Sarah as he had said he would; the LORD did for her as he had promised. Sarah became pregnant and bore Abraham a son in his old age, at the set time that God had stated. Abraham gave the name Isaac to this son of his whom Sarah bore him. When his son Isaac was eight days old, Abraham circumcised him, as God had commanded. Abraham was a hundred years old when his son Isaac was born to him. Praise be to God always.

A Reading from the letter of Saint Paul the Apostle to the Ephesians (2:11-22)
Brothers and Sisters, Remember that at one time you Gentiles by birth, called “the uncircumcision” by those who are called “the circumcision” — a physical circumcision made in the flesh by human hands—remember that you were at that time without Christ, being aliens from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers to the covenants of promise, having no hope and without God in the world. But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ. For he is our peace; in his flesh he has made both groups into one and has broken down the dividing wall, that is, the hostility between us. He has abolished the law with its commandments and ordinances, that he might create in himself one new humanity in place of the two, thus making peace, and might reconcile both groups to God in one body through the cross, thus putting to death that hostility through it. So he came and proclaimed peace to you who were far off and peace to those who were near; for through him both of us have access in one Spirit to the Father. So then you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are citizens with the saints and also members of the household of God, built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus himself as the cornerstone. In him the whole structure is joined together and grows into a holy temple in the Lord; in whom you also are built together spiritually into a dwelling place for God.

A reading from the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to St. JOHN (14:27-31)
The Lord Jesus said: Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled, and do not let them be afraid. You heard me say to you, ‘I am going away, and I am coming to you.’ If you loved me, you would rejoice that I am going to the Father, because the Father is greater than I. And now I have told you this before it occurs, so that when it does occur, you may believe. I will no longer talk much with you, for the ruler of this world is coming. He has no power over me; but I do as the Father has commanded me, so that the world may know that I love the Father. Rise, let us be on our way.

A Reading from the 1st book of Kings (14.12-9.7-5:3.) Your blessing Father
At Gibeon the LORD appeared to Solomon in a dream by night; and God said, ‘Ask what I should give you.’ And Solomon said, ‘You have shown great and steadfast love to your servant my father David, because he walked before you in faithfulness, in righteousness, and in uprightness of heart towards you; and you have kept for him this great and steadfast love, and have given him a son to sit on his throne today. And now, O LORD my God, you have made your servant king in place of my father David, although I am only a little child; I do not know how to go out or come in. And your servant is in the midst of the people whom you have chosen, a great people, so numerous they cannot be numbered or counted. Give your servant therefore an understanding mind to govern your people, able to discern between good and evil; for who can govern this your great people?’ It pleased the Lord that Solomon had asked this. God said to him, ‘Because you have asked this, and have not asked for yourself long life or riches, or for the life of your enemies, but have asked for yourself understanding to discern what is right, I now do according to your word. Indeed I give you a wise and discerning mind; no one like you has been before you and no one like you shall arise after you. I give you also what you have not asked, both riches and honour all your life; no other king shall compare with you. If you will walk in my ways, keeping my statutes and my commandments, as your father David walked, then I will lengthen your life.’ Your Blessing Father

A Reading from the letter to the Hebrews (7:11-19)
Brothers and Sisters, If perfection had been attainable through the levitical priesthood for the people received the law under this priesthood what further need would there have been to speak of another priest arising according to the order of Melchizedek, rather than one according to the order of Aaron? For when there is a change in the priesthood, there is necessarily a change in the law as well. Now the one of whom these things are spoken belonged to another tribe, from which no one has ever served at the altar. For it is evident that our Lord was descended from Judah, and in connection with that tribe Moses said nothing about priests. It is even more obvious when another priest arises, resembling Melchizedek, one who has become a priest, not through a legal requirement concerning physical descent, but through the power of an indestructible life. For it is attested of him, ‘You are a priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek.’ There is, on the one hand, the abrogation of an earlier commandment because it was weak and ineffectual (for the law made nothing perfect); there is, on the other hand, the introduction of a better hope, through which we approach God. Praise be to God always.

From the Gospel of our Lord according to Saint Luke (2: 41-52)
Every year his parents went to Jerusalem for the festival of the Passover and when he was twelve years old, they went up as usual for the festival. When the festival was ended and they started to return, the boy Jesus stayed behind in Jerusalem, but his parents did not know it. Assuming that he was
in the group of travellers, they went a day’s journey. Then they started to look for him among their relatives and friends. When they did not find him, they returned to Jerusalem to search for him. After three days they found him in the temple, sitting among the teachers, listening to them and asking them questions. And all who heard him were amazed at his understanding and his answers. When his parents saw him, they were astonished; and his mother said to him, ‘Child, why have you treated us like this? Look, your father and I have been searching for you in great anxiety.’ He said to them, ‘Why were you searching for me? Did you not know that I must be in my Father’s house?’ But they did not understand what he said to them. Then he went down with them and came to Nazareth, and was obedient to them. His mother treasured all these things in her heart. And Jesus increased in wisdom and in years, and in divine and human favour. Peace be with you.
